The Aubelle in autumn: the season of colours and mushrooms

When the poplars turn yellow and the mist lingers on the river, the area changes face. A short guide to a special season.

From late September, the banks of the Aubelle take on copper tones. It is the time for long walks: low light, undergrowth smelling of humus and, with luck, ceps in the oak wood.

Three walks to see the colours

  • The riverbank loop, early morning for the mist.
  • The ridge path, for the view over the whole valley.
  • The boardwalk across the peat bog, russet at this time of year.

And on the plate

Local restaurants switch to autumn dishes: stews, mushrooms, Granges squash. The farm inn serves Sunday meals until All Saints’ Day.

“Autumn is the season when you have the river to yourself.”
